Feature Room: Min Yong, Founder of Beverly’s Blooms
As Mother’s Day rolls around this weekend, we catch up with Min—entrepreneur, wife, mother of two and founder of Singapore-based bespoke flower service, Beverly’s Blooms, to find out simply how she does it all!
She will be setting up a fresh bouquet bar this weekend at SPRMRKT Kitchen + Bar to spread the joy with her blooms, so head upstairs if you are nearby!
1) Tell us about a day in your life.
This is a tough question as no day is ever the same. Generally, it will consist of waking up early to get my kids ready for school, walking them there, dealing with tantrums, shopping for flowers, creating bouquets, administrative work, Muay Thai, errands, more errands, cooking dinner, stopping my son from throwing dinner at the dog, showering the kids and putting them to bed. If I’m lucky, I will squeeze in a lunch or coffee with friends, or sneak in a dinner at a restaurant with my husband, and reading before bed. Oh, my days include wine. Lots of wine!
2) How and when did you get started on Beverly’s Blooms?
Beverly’s Blooms started long before the business did. I have always loved flowers and would go to the flower market every Sunday morning with my daughter, Beverly. Being near flowers always makes me happy and I love how these stems add so much life into big or small spaces. I know that I am not the only one who is impacted so positively by natures blooms.
When I visited a dear friend in San Francisco early last year, she raved on about a personalised subscription service for tastefully curated flower arrangements using seasonal blooms which were always different and unique.
And that’s how it all began. “For Life’s Big, Small and Precious Moments in-between, there is Beverly’s Blooms” is the mission statement behind my business, and to put it simply, we want to gift flowers to people to make them happy, refresh homes, offices and cafes through beautiful flowers.
3) How different has life been since becoming a mum?
Since becoming a mum, my life has changed dramatically. There is a night and day difference in some aspects of my life such as work/business, social life, holidays and generally putting others needs ahead of mine. Still, I do “try” to maintain some aspects of my life pre-baby such as taking the time to exercise and carving out pockets of “quality” time for people I love.
4) Where do you find inspiration for your floral arrangements?
Growing up in Melbourne, nature was all around us. I would joke that hydrangeas were like a weed in our garden where my sisters and I would hide behind them, not caring if the big beautiful flowers were collateral damage. Ironically, being in Singapore, we’re paying up to $15 per stem.
Hmmmm…. Nature and gardens/parks are my inspiration for my floral arrangements. I love the idea of ‘nature’ so in my arrangements, I like to use fresh foliage and make the bouquets look really relaxed like they were just picked.
5) Do you like receiving flowers yourself? How does it make you feel?
Of course I do. Receiving flowers always makes my day.
6) What is your idea of a perfect Mother’s Day?
Good question! Involves spending quality time with my kiddies for a walk or picnic at the Botanic Gardens or Gardens by the Bay, and some “me-time” which could be a massage, mani-pedi or shopping. It’s the one day in the year that a mother has the right to do as she pleases, I say!
